They say the ride doesn’t have anything to do with eroticism, but I have my own thoughts on that

In keeping, with the culture in Bellingham, our "City of Subdued Excitement," local WNBR ride organizers strive to avoid any erotic or sexual connotations related to the ride. However, mainstream culture, in our city, isn’t always subdued. When walking around downtown bars late on weekend evenings one can find lots of pretty wild drinking. In American culture, eroticism plays a big part for selling everything from fast cars to expensive weight loss clinics. Why does something healthy always have to be no place for any erotic feelings? Isn’t that also buying into a pathology of mainstream culture?

Eroticism is one part of our human condition. It’s sort of the odd cousin who isn’t comfortably seated at the table. While a bit scary and dangerous, eroticism can sure be a powerful motivator. It works to sell cars and consumptive lifestyles. Why can’t we figure out how to harness that energy toward healthy lifestyles and environmentally friendly living?

To me, it makes sense to think of bicycling as being something more than just an obligatory thing the doctor orders to maintain one’s health and protect the environment. Why can’t things like agility and traveling light be thought of as sexy? I don’t necessarily mean hard core sexy, but there is an appeal to staying healthy.

So many people give up on dancing and mingling as the years go by. I notice this quite a bit among, for instance, older gay men. People party like crazy in youth and then often spend the rest of their lives nursing the pains. Sometimes nursing the pains in isolation. Health can make something like dancing a life long activity.

I think part of the problem is the competitive nature of our culture. Competitiveness seems most evident in the mainstream dating world. Look at the behavior on internet dating sites. Even before the internet, mate shopping has always been competitive.

Another kind of thinking is non competitive, or collaborative. Things with emphasis on inclusiveness. That’s just what the WNBR rides are. It’s not really a competition. The rides strive to be inclusive for a wide range of ages, capabilities and so forth.

Often, it seems like people go from one extreme to another in American culture. From crazy partying to hiding in the suburbs, so to speak, governed by "stranger danger."

One positive thing about biking and especially walking is that one is exposed to people. Even when fully clothed, it’s easier to stop and chat the folks in your immediate environment, while biking or walking, than it is while hurtling down the freeway in an automobile.
