Skill in the selection of gearing conduces to economy results in weight reduction. In the control equipmentsused by the New York Municipal Railway on their newsubway cars, the switch group which is designed tohandle two 200 hp. motors weighs but 900 lb., scarcelymore than half the weight of the former control outfitof similar capacity. By combining all the main-circuit apparatus in asingle box a further reduction in weight has resulted,due to the decrease in the amount of cable and conduitrequired and in the labor and consequent cost of instal-lation. Another marked saving in weight has been effectedby a special design of grid resistor, whereby the weightof a set has been reduced approximately 40 per centwithout loss in continuous capacity. Not only has the weight of resistors for a givencapacity been decreased by better ventilation and in-creased radiation, but control connections, also, havebeen rearranged so that the same section of resistanceis used several times in increasing the
