Getting Serious About Diabesity
A large portion of the population of the United States suffers from diabetes. Many more are at risk. Diabetes leads to very serious complications and often to slow, painful death. This is frequently the case in San Antonio, where 18% of adults are diabetic. For too many people, traditional medical approaches have not and are not working. Seriously addressing this problem means working on at least three different levels: 1) fully deploy the new diagnostic technology of hemoglobin A1C, 2) take a community organizing approach to diabetes
prevention, and 3) address head-on the excess sugar in the American diet.

At the Sigma Zeta Omega of Alpha Kappa Sorority’s March Madness basketball tournament and fund raiser at Bayard School in Wilmington, Christiana Care employees volunteered to provide health information and screenings.

Many Christiana Care employees continue their service to the community outside our hospital walls as volunteers for civic and community organizations. They use their skills and talents to help better their communities.

Adrienne Abner, director of Christiana Care’s Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Department and a member of the sorority, and event organizer and sorority sister V. Sheryl Amore, nurse in Christiana Care’s Heart & Vascular department joined with Nora Katurakes and the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center Community Health Outreach and Education team to support the event.

Abner provided blood-pressure screenings to more than 20 individuals, including her sorority sisters and six basketball players. She counseled those whose blood pressure was high, reminding them to consistently take their blood-pressure medication daily, and to limit sodium in their diets by paying attention to nutrition labels, not add salt to food and choose sodium-free spices when cooking.

With the help of the Community Health Outreach and Education team, one woman at the event was able to set up a colon-screening appointment.

While Christiana Care fulfills the broader health care needs of the community, the sorority offers health promotion and disease prevention in communities with fragmented medical care. The sorority’s nurses work closely with Christiana Care and community organizations to help individuals at risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes and asthma, especially those in the city of Wilmington.

The sixth annual March Madness basketball tournament event attracted more than 200 people.
