According to Nice, one in 100 people in the UKare estimated to have coeliac disease. But thenumber of diagnosed patients is only the tip of theiceberg, a mere 10 to 15 per cent of patients withthe condition. According to PSNC only two PCTs -Northamptonshire and Cornwall & Isles of Sciily -offer a gluten-free foods local enhanced service.So what can pharmacists do to get involved? Patients with coeliac disease can present with avariety of symptoms, including diarrhoea,recurrent abdominal pain and prolonged fatigue.Other signs and symptoms include sudden orunexpected weight loss, unexplained anaemia andpersistent or unexplained nausea and vomiting. An effort was made to reducethe dislocation of the right shoulder, but outside ofgaining freer motion in the shoulder joint no im-provement in the position was effected. An incisionwas made in the anterior surface of the shoulderjoint, and a fracture of the surgical neck of thehumerus discovered. The head of the bone was taken out. Two weeks later reduction of the leftHJioulder was attempted under ether; but this wasalso unsuccessful.
